The eye of hurricane Ike has powered onto land in Galveston, Texas, and the storm is punishing the shoreline with 110 mph winds.

Forecasters say the sheer size of Hurricane Ike, almost as big as Texas itself, means hours more of it battering the state. The storm slammed onto Galveston Island this morning, flooding thousands of homes.
