Magnitude 6.5 quake shakes sea floor off Vanuatu in South Pacific

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) _ A strong earthquake has rocked the sea floor off the coast of the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, but there are no immediate reports of injury or damage.

The magnitude-6.5 quake struck at 2:03 p.m. local time Monday about 53 miles below the earth’s crust, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Web site.

The temblor, about 125 miles southwest of Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, in the South Pacific, did not trigger a tsunami alert from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Vanuatu sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a collation of earthquake fault lines and active volcanoes stretching from Chile to Alaska and down through Japan past Vanuatu to Tonga in the South Pacific ocean.
