WASHINGTON – A minor earthquake shook the California coast when it erupted out to sea early Friday, the US Geological Survey said.
The 5.8 magnitude quake, hit at 5:42 am (1342 GMT) some 221 kilometers (138 miles) west of Petrolia, California and 481 kilometers (299 miles) northwest of San Francisco. Initially the center had said the quake had measured 5.4.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
The Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii has not issued a warning in response to the event.
