A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Batanes province Friday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.
The shallow undersea quake struck at 8:28 pm (1228 GMT) around 108 kilometers (67 miles) northwest of Basco, the capital of the Batan Islands, which lie in the Luzon Strait between the Philippines and Taiwan, the USGS said.
The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers, it said.
The Philippines, a nation made up of more than 7,000 islands, sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
