ATHENS, Greece: The state Athens News Agency says an 18-year-old Romanian woman died when a wall of the compound where she was housed collapsed during a mild earthquake.

The 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck at 7:10 a.m. (0510 GMT) Sunday at sea off the Peloponnese, 195 kilometers (122 miles) southwest of Athens. Quakes of that magnitude occur frequently in Greece, causing little or no damage and generating little attention.

earthquakeA 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s West Papua province at 7:33 a.m. on Sunday (2233 GMT on Saturday), according to the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG).

The quake was a strong aftershock following a 7.2-magnitude earthquake which jolted eastern Indonesia’ West Papua at 4:43 a.m. local time on Sunday (1943 GMT Saturday), Indonesia’s leading website Detik News quoted BMG as saying.

The epicenter of the 7.6-magnitude aftershock was 0.88 degrees southern latitude and 133.38 degrees eastern longitude with a depth of 10 km below the sea level, the BMG said.

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico - A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Thursday afternoon, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake struck about 13 miles (20 kilometers) from the city of Suchiate, on the Guatemalan border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, Russia, Oct. 4 (UPI) — A mild earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale hit the Russian island of Sakhalin Saturday, the Russian Emergencies Ministry says.

The ministry’s Sakhalin regional department said the earthquake on the North Pacific island controlled by Russia occurred nearly 20 miles north of the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, ITAR-TASS reported.

The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station said the epicenter of the earthquake was more than 6 miles underground.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Civil Defense issued no tsunami warning following the quake, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin on its Web site that “no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data” for the Kermadec area.

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck near New Zealand’s remote and largely uninhabited Kermadec Islands early Tuesday, New Zealand’s GNS Science geological agency said.

(RTTNews) -  At least 22 people were killed and over 100 others injured after an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit China’s southwestern province of Sichuan on Saturday, said officials.

Officials said that the quake struck about 31 miles southeast of Panzhihua city in the southwestern Sichuan and added that the tremors were felt as far as Kunming, the capital of neighboring Yunnan province, located about 300 km away.
